The death of Sarah Everard and how it impacted the world.
As you might have heard of what is going on and if not this is for you.
This post is going to be about how
Sarah Everard's Death Set Off a Movement
Her death was an eye-opener to thousands, about the sexual abuse towards women. She was killed allegedly by a police officer, this vile action caused thousands of women and men to stand up for what was right.
Sarah Everard was a 33-year-old woman who did everything "right". She called her boyfriend, she didn't wear "revealing" clothes, she did what everyone told her she should do to stay "safe", but that was not enough. Because she never came home on March 3rd, 2021. Late last week her death was confirmed, this death was the last straw.
Women have been sexually harassed for a long long time, globally around 97% percent of women have been sexually harassed in some way, be it in the form of rape, unwanted photos, inappropriate touching, catcalling, sexual abuse, or being forced to do things that they did not want. That does seem like a big number and it is, but this is not all because many either never got the chance to say their story because the harassment they went through caused their death, or they are too afraid of what will happen if they do speak up. Yes these statistics vary from different sites, some say only 35% globally but it does not matter, because even if there is more than 1% it is too much.
After Sarah Everard's death, the officer was charged with the crime. Her name became a movement, for the rights that women so very deserve, to fight against violence against women in Britain, to show as a symbol for those who have been wronged, for those whose voices were taken, for those whose dignity was lost in the dust.
Sarah Everard's was taken too soon, and I pray for her family and the remaining 3% of women. Stay safe and take care. If you are part of the 97% you are so strong, and you deserve your justice, it will come.
